Péter Meller (1923-2008) art historian is presented from an unknown side in the exhibition. Few people know that besides his research, Meller had a passione for drawing and produced prints with a technique invented by himself. The current exhibition presents his most beautiful graphics: from his legacies and private collections, about seventy works can be seen in the graphic exhibition in the hall of the Hungarian National Gallery.

litograph, paper

József Rippl-Rónai (1861-1927) was born 150 years ago, and this exhibition recalls his life and work. Rippl-Rónai's abundant drawing and printmaking activity is shown at the exhibition with such pieces that came into the property of the Hungarian National Gallery through the Museum of Fine Arts which received them as a gift from both the artist and three collectors playing an important role at the early 19th century Hungarian art life: Elek Petrovics, Simon Meller and Dr. Pál Majovszky.

A significant part of Rippl-Rónai's graphic works contains large-scale ink drawings prepared between the 1890s and the middle of 1910s. The pieces, originally dating from the 1890s from France, he only dated later and were most probably pre-dated. In most of the pieces, in fact dating back to the middle of 1890s, the model was Lazarine Baudrion, Rippl-Rónai's partner in Paris. On his pen drawings, sometimes coloured with aquarelle, Lazarine is dressing, lying on a bed, pedicuring, embroidering, sewing or reading with her hands under her chin. Outstanding pieces of the early pen drawings are the extremely plastic Female Nude (Marguerite Renard) and two pieces with a woman dancer on each. Some of the pen drawings were prepared in 1899 in a small Pyrenees village, Banyuls-sur-Mer where Rippl-Rónai spent three months as a guest of the sculptor Aristide Maillol. A piece of these is one of the most beautiful portraits of the artist, depicting Maillol's wife, Clotilde in a pondering, affectionate manner.

A kiállításon több Andersen mese illusztrációja is szerepel, többi közt : A csodálatos tűzszerszám, A rút kiskacsa, A császár új ruhája. E. T. A. Hoffmann Diótörő és az egérkirály meséjét megelevenítő rajzok is bemutatásra kerülnek és Petőfi Sándor János vitéze is életre kel a rajzokon. Igazi karácsonyi történetek is megelevenednek a galéria művészeinek alkotásain: Engel Tevan István Karácsonyi meséje sok hóhullással, Mikulás gyárral és hóemberrel. Lackfi János Karácsonyi vándorok című története, melyet Makhult Gabriella linómetszetei illusztrálnak.
Hőlégballonok, sárkányok és boszorkányok idézik még a mesék néhol rejtélyes máskor mulatságos, fantáziában gazdag világát.

The exhibition was opened in the Vaci Depository at 14 October 2010, titled "Hincz Gyula forgotten artworks". This exhibition is the contiuation of this series, where we can explores various pieces of Hincz's oeuvre.

Hincz illustrated hundreds of books from the 1940s faithfully followed Babits idea that "... the drawing is not a translator of the poet's work: it completes: Because it tells you what the poet can't."

Generations have been raised up reading these children's books (Weöres Sándor: Bóbita, Zimzizim, Radnóti Miklós: Esti mosolygás, etc) created by the visual world. Latter he said: "I feel I can't start visual education early enough . Therefore, I'm gladly I can illustrate these books for childrens. "
