Luigi Ficacci:
Piranesi's fantastic worlds
The great 18th century architectural artist and master engraver

Publisher: TASCHEN
Year: 2011
Content: 792 pages
Language: English, French, German

One of the greatest architectural artists of all time, and certainly the most famous copper engraver of the 18th century, Giovanni Battista Piranesi (1720-1778) is best known for his terrifyingly original series of etchings of labyrinthine and megalomaniac prisons, Carceri d'Invenzione. In his own day, he was most celebrated for his Vedute, 137 etchings of ancient and modern Rome; so renowned were these startling and dramatic chiaroscuro images, imbued with Piranesi's romantic feeling for archaeological ruins, that they formed the mental picture of Rome for generations after. Indeed, Piranesi could be said to have shaped a whole strain of contemporary architecture, as well as the wider visualization of antiquity itself. In our time, he has had a direct influence on writers such as Borges and Kafka and on filmmakers such as Terry Gilliam and Peter Greenaway.

"An artistic homage to a genius."

Since some weeks I am industrious, productive and innovative. Above all I am on the track of a quite different and another type of impossible figure,. I can see it for my inner sight. It mixes up what is near and distant in an overwhelming way.. I hope that I perhaps will carry out and realize this "discovery". I have gone through series of trials and errors, but not yet achieved a "credible" result. When I will succeed, perhaps I will be able to draw an inside out Eiffel tower

probably etching, paper

The first list of symbols of techniques used in creating and printing ex-libris was adopted in 1958 at the Barcelona Congress of FISAE. However, a major revision was needed.
A revised list, given below, was adopted at the XXIX Congress, Frederikshavn DK, in August 2002.

A basic subdivision enables even relatively uninformed collectors to observe an ex-libris and determine in which of the three categories it belongs:
Intaglio - The ink is deposited from the grooves of the plate
Relief - The ink is deposited from the reliefs of the plate
Flatbed/stencil/electronic - The ink is deposited from the flat surface of the plate, through a stencil or screen, or electronically
